What's New in Review
New meat products have made their way onto store shelves and restaurant menus in recent months. Meat Marketing & Technology, with the aid of Marketing Intelligence Service of Naples, N.Y., reviews what's new in the market.
-- Aidells Sausage Co., San Leandro, Calif., introduces its Smoked Venison & Wild Rice Sausage.
It contains a blend of venison meat, pork, wild rice, cranberries and dried shiitake mushrooms.
The sausage comes four to a pack and is priced about $4.80 a pack. Product contains no artificial flavors, fillers, extenders or MSG.
-- Ham I Am!, Richardson, Texas, offers its Ozark Trails Smoked Peppered Bacon. It is rolled in brown sugar, and rubbed in cracked black peppercorns.
-- GoodMark Foods Inc., Raleigh, N.C., introduces Pemmican Tender Kippered Beef Steak. The 1.4-ounce package of beef jerky is available in original, peppered and teriyaki varieties.
-- Royal Chase Ostrich Inc., Stillwater, Minn., offers ostrich meat in ground and medallion varieties. Ground retails for $8 a pound and medallion retails for $20 a pound.
-- Kronos-Central Products, Chicago, offers its Pizza Gyros. The frozen gyros contain gyro meat, spinach, pizza sauce, garlic and green peppers.
Each box contains two gyros wrapped in flavored breads, including garlic Parmesan, tomato basil and jalapeno cheese. Product retails from $2.29 to $2.79
-- Oscar Mayer Foods Corp., Madison, Wis., has extended its Lunchables line of refrigerated lunch combinations with three low-fat varieties.
Presented in the Fun Pack, two of the varieties are ham and Swiss, and ham and cheddar.
Full-page advertisements are used for promotion.
-- Bob Evans Farms, Columbus, Ohio, introduces Snackwiches, fully cooked, refrigerated sandwiches available in three varieties: ham and cheese bagels, sausage cheeseburgers and sausage biscuits. They are packaged in a cardboard box and are microwaveable.
Advertisements feature 35-cent coupons.
-- Luigino's, Duluth, Minn., introduces two versions of Yu Sing Restaurant Style Frozen Chinese Food-beef and broccoli, and sweet and sour pork. The microwaveable dinners cook in 10 minutes and are packaged in boxes.
-- Jimmy Dean Foods, Memphis, Tenn., introduces Tastefuls!, which feature two sandwiches, chips and dessert.
The sandwiches include lean ham, turkey and chicken breast with French's mustard and real cheese in split-top buns. Frito Lay chips and desserts such as Oreo cookies or a Sara Lee brownie are also included.
Retail price is $2.29.
-- Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., introduces its lasagna with meat sauce, and macaroni and beef as part of its line of Lunch and More Frozen Entrees.
Product is packaged in overboxed trays that retail for about $1.79.
-- Don Miguel Mexican Foods Inc., Anaheim, Calif., has reformulated its Mexican Combination Dinner to have more beef.
The entree contains two shredded beef enchiladas with sauce, corn and peppers with sauce, Spanish rice and beef tamale.
The product is microwaveable.
-- Purely American, Norfolk, Va., has available its Kentucky Bluegrass Derby Day Burgoo, a regional favorite food that is popular on Kentucky Derby day.
The product is a lima bean blend combined with meat, vegetables and Kentucky bourbon.
-- Titterington's Olde English Bake Shop Ltd., Cambridge, Mass., introduces Sconewich, a triangular cheese scone filled with vegetables, herbs and cheeses.
The product is available in three varieties, including smoked ham and cheese.
It can be served at room temperature, sliced, toasted, or with mustards, salads and soups.
