New Meat Products - April 1996

New meat products have made their way onto store shelves and restaurant menus in recent months. Meat Marketing & Technology, with the aid of Marketing Intelligence Service of Naples, N.Y., reviews what's new in the market.

--Jack Link's Snack Foods, Minong Wis., offers Jack Link Jumbo Kippered Beefsteak, available in Original Beef, Black Peppered Beefsteak, Honey-Glazed Hamsteak and Turkeysteak. The snack is 12-inches long and weighs 2.25 ounces. Retail price is $1.99 to $2.19.

--John's Market, Elgin, Ill., has expanded its exotic snack meat line to include Hotter-N-Hell Beef Stick, Hotter-N-Hell Elk Stick and Black Pepper Wild Boar Stick.

--O'Brien & Co,, Bellevue, Neb., introduces Double Barrel Steak Strips in honey teriyaki and beef varieties.

The strips are made with lean beef and seasonings, with no fillers or extenders, the company says, and are smoked with natural hickory. Two steak strips are packaged in a 1.375-ounce packet.

--Ruiz Food Products, Dinuba, Calif., offers El Monterey Frozen Burritos as half pounders. Varieties include beef, beef and bean, and bean and green chili and beef,

The larger-size burritos are sold in wrappers identifying them as such. The wrappers feature a laminated film to ensure tamper resistance and product integrity.

Suggested retail price for the single-serve burritos varies between 69 cents and 79 cents.

--RHSCO Enterprises, Chicago, introduces a line of frozen entrees under the Tango Classic Mexican Foods brand name, including beef and cheese enchiladas.

Two enchiladas are presented on an overwrapped plastic tray with a cardboard sleeve. Retail price is $2.99.

--Vie de France Corp., introduces Vie de France Dinner for 4, a gourmet line that features rack of lamb, haricots verts, wild rice and au jus. The gourmet dinners are fully cooked and only need to be reheated. Retail price is $36.35.

Marinated Chicken Breast and Seared Norwegian Salmon are also available.

--Cloverdale Meats Co., Mandan, N.D., introduces an 11-rib, semi-boneless prime rib of pork loin.

Chine bone and feather bones are removed, fat cover is trimmed to one-eighth-inch average, and it is vacuumed packaged.

--Choo Choo R Snacks, Lebanon, Pa., offers Buffalo Bills Smokin' Beef Stogies. Ingredients include beef, salt, sugar, water, flavoring, lactic acid starter culture and sodium nitrite.

The stogies are packed 20 to a bag. They are 6-inches long, and suggested retail price is $1 a stick.

--Medford Foods, Chester, Pa., has developed a line of cocktail franks for Van Den Bergh Foods. The cocktail franks, in Italian sausage and Mexican flavors, are wrapped in puffed pastry. Medford is also introducing a honey-mustard flavored beef frank.

--Kenny Rogers, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., recently rolled out its Honey Bourbon Baby Back Ribs, the newest entree to join its wood-fire roasted rotisserie chicken and turkey line.

Roasters uses premium, pork loin back ribs. The ribs feature a subtly smoked flavor with a combination of barbecue sauce enhanced by honey and bourbon

Rib meals start at $7.99 for half a slab. Meal selections include a choice of two side dishes and a muffin.

--Jones Dairy Farm, Fort Atkinson, Wis., has extended its breakfast sausages to the dinner hour by adding a line of ethnic-style dinner items including Polish kielbasa, bratwurst and Italian sausage.

Jones also recently introduced a line of packaged deli items. The "Country Carved" line offers pre-sliced, portioned packages of popular meats such as salami, pepperoni and maple ham. MM&T

--Healthy Choice, Downers Grove, Ill., introduces Hearty Deli Flavor Sliced Meats, a line of distinctly seasoned thick-sliced meats.

The new line includes Baked Honey Ham, Brown Sugar Cured Ham and Zesty Corned Beef.

Hearty Deli Flavor Sliced Meats contain 1.5 grams or less of fat and 480 milligrams of sodium a serving.
